Not sure if it’s been mentioned before, but while in Greece, late at night, Rodney hit an unlit Greek fishing boat, which damaged the front crossmember.  The front cross member is a large aluminum section that goes between the two hulls up forward:
We contacted Robertson and Caine in South Africa, and they started working on building a new crossmember about 2 months ago,  It was built, put on a ship which went from South Africa to Germany and then down to the Canary Islands.  The crossmember is about 17 feet long, make of aluminum and weighs about 150 lbs.  It arrived in the Canary Islands about a week ago,
Rodney spent alot of time and effort, trying to grease the skids with customs so that the cross member would be out of customs and ready for us to do the install as soon as we arrived,  Unfortunately, the guy who Rodney had asked to help us clear with customs dropped the ball, so we had a day or two delay getting the crossmember out of customs,.  Yesterday, it finally arrived:
Everyone hear breaks midday for siesta, here’s the sign for the rigging shop, they are closed midday from 1-4 pm, but everyone works into the evening,.  We were lucky the truck driver didn’t follow these hours,.  The crossmember was supposed to arrive between 11am and 1 pm.  It showed up around 3.
Then there was the unpacking and bringing it down to the dock:
We were very concerned about the dimensions of the new crossmember, the tolerances are pretty tight, and we didn’t want to pull the old crossmember off, in case there was a mistake with the new one,  Luckily, it looks like they will be close enough,.  In the worse case, the backup plan would be to leave the old crossmember in place and only fly the spinnaker, which would not put any load on the damaged crossmember.
Given that the new crossmember’s dimemsions looked good, we start to take off the old one,..  I spent way too much time inside the hull, in this cramped corner with a socket wrench, undoing bolts:  Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be the smallest guy on the boat,
We finally did get the old crossmember off:
I’ll send more pictures later.  We are about a day or two behind schedule because of the customs delay.  We hope to have the mew crossmember put back together today, then we will start provisioning.
I’m writing this at about 3am local time, and I can hear the drumbeat from one of the restaurant/bars that apparently has dancing all night.  I don’t know when these guys sleep,
Eric
