St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European town in North America.  The area was first explored in 1513 by the governor of Puerto Rico, Ponce de Leon, who sailed to the New World with Christopher Columbus in 1493.  In 1565 the town was established about 100 years later Castillo de San Marcos, was built to defend Spain’s territory.  This fort is made out of coquina, Spanish for “small shells”, limestone filled with shells.  Not only was the fort built in a great location with the perfect offensive design, but the coquina was especially resilient to the cannon balls fired on them.  Since the blocks of coquina are softer, they didn’t shatter when struck by enemy lead. Over the years this area was occupied by the Spanish, French, British and Americans.  Each time the Castillo changed hands it was by a treaty and not by hostile take overs.

We stayed in a small hotel down the beach from town. Despite the chilly temperatures, we had fun on the beach.  The sand was all shells, whole shells, crushed shells, shells under a thin layer of sand, and more shells.  Roy found that when digging a hole in the sand at low tide, it would fill with water trapped in the shell filled beach above his hole, over flow and make a stream flowing back to the surf.
