Beach Dive

Today was Roy’s first open water dive. We met in Laguna at 7am and were excited for this new experience. After a quick brief from Lindsay, the instructor, we went back to the car to get dressed. Wet suit, booties, hood, bcd, tank, regulator, weights, gloves, mask around the neck and fins in hand. At this point any movement was exhausting. From the car we walked two blocks to the stairs at the top of the beach access. Roy and I quickly wilted under the weight and neoprene so we got permission to go to the beach and take our heavy gear off. With all that constricting hot gear, we could easily get sick. Finally our group was ready to crash into the waves and head out to the buoy. Once at the bottom movement was effortless, we were much cooler and now we could enjoy the sites. Big orange Garibaldi everywhere, kelp columns rising up to the surface, fish cleverly camouflaged in the sand and the bottom was thick with shells. The dive felt way to short and then it was time to do the exit and return to the car. This time we had to walk up all those stairs with all the gear. By the time we got to the car the relief of taking everything off was almost more exciting than the dive.

Tomorrow is boat diving in Catalina. This is going to WAY better, and then after that we’ll be diving off of Makai in tropical waters. No more neoprene, half the weight, jump off the boat, no hiking, warm water, more cool fish. Yes, that’s what it’s all about.
