We already went to one county fair this summer, but the AAnonson’s talked about all the fun things at the LA County fair, so we had to go. Since it was only a month ago that we had been to the Erie County fair in New York, I noticed the similarities and differences. The most glaring difference had to do with the animal barns. In NY, the animal barns were geared toward families showing their animals. They would set up camp chairs and cots, I remember crock pots simmering dinner and young people in the rings hoping for a blue ribbon. The EC fair took place in August when the kids were out of school and they could participate. LA fair is in September, there was one big animal barn geared toward education, more of a petting zoo atmosphere. Local schools attend, there are groups of kids with their school t-shirts and chaperons and many of the exhibits had educational presentations.
The kids enjoyed seeing the goats, sheep, pigs, chicks, and cows, but the real excitement came when we found a preying mantis.
At one point someone put it on a school girl and she totally FREAKED out. The man from the bee exhibit ran over and save the poor insect’s life by tossing it back into the bushes before she stomped on it.
The bee exhibit was interesting too. They had a pipe leading into this hive display. Notice the bee with the yellow dot that the finger is pointing to. That is the queen, her ladies in waiting surround her like a flower, tending to all her needs. Her only job is to lay eggs, if she dies, the hive prepares new pupae to hatch as queens. The first one to hatch, kills the rest and becomes the new queen.
There was another exhibit for inventions. It was one of the best museums I’ve been to in a long time. First of all, it was air conditioned, a pleasant relief from the heat. The kids had a great time with the Benjamin Franklin electricity exhibit and I was impressed by Steve Jobs’ patents.

There were also Wright Bros. and Ford exhibits, and plaques all over the walls describing other inventions.
The last highlight for the day was the rides. First of all each ride cost’s between $5 and $10 and there was no way we were going to pay those prices. So, Krista clued us into a library offer where the kids can do book reports for rides. The each did 6 book reports and received 6 free rides.
When they decided to do a ride the conversation always had to do with whether or not it was worth a book report.
In the end, everyone was happy with their choices.
