Observations on the Road

I searched and searched, but there just weren’t any simple activities for today’s road trip.  So today was mostly filled with Highway observations.

Since we were traveling in Texas, we decided to look for BIG things, in this BIG state.  Yesterday, half of us had a filling lunch and the other half had food with their ice cream, we never had a proper dinner.  When we finally checked into our hotel room, which was quite BIG, someone mentioned food.  I was tired so all they got was a BIG apple. Since they had a light dinner, all had a BIG appetite in the morning, perfect for a BIG breakfast.

Heading down the road, we saw one of those Texas Longhorn bulls with the BIG horns behind a fence along the highway.  It was just standing there counting cars or something.  Then we also noticed that sometime the evening before the terrain had changed from desert to grass. The view along the roads looks a little like Pennsylvania.   Throughout the day we saw the grass get greener and the trees get BIGGER.  Texas’ flag is easy to spot with one BIG white stripe over a BIG red one, next to a BIG blue field and one BIG white star.  Lets talk about BIG cities here.  After hours and hours of rural towns and truck stops Dallas and Fort Worth were more than BIG, they were HUGE.  Just about when one city seemed to end the next started.  The buildings were beautiful and I was really glad we were on the freeway at noon instead of 5pm because I bet the traffic is pretty BIG too.

Another BIG help was the BIG savings on gas.  Wow, $3.09 per gallon. Ok, enough of the BIG stuff.

Roy has been riding up front on this trip.  The kids in the back don’t really see much out the windows, Roy got to play “Name That Road Kill” since he’s been riding up front.  Some of the road kill we saw include several deer, coyotes, raccoons, skunks,  large rodent type things, a pig, and several unidentifiable piles of fir.  We saw highway patrol everywhere, they had those flat brimmed hats and sports cars. They reminded me of Smokey and the Bandit or something.  Places like Texarkana, and Winslow Arizona on the road signs remind me of songs.

We’ve also been enjoying the snacks everyone gave us.  Roy received a great bag of snacks from his CBS bible study class, our neighbor Bev gave them goody bags, Beth and Jim gave me a yummy 4 pack of single serving wine bottles, and of course there was Halloween candy to sustain us between stops.  Thanks everyone.

We’re in Natchitoches, Louisiana tonight.  We went to the grocery store to pick up microwavable dinner items, on the way in, the blood mobile flagged us down.  I just had to donate because it was cool in their RV.

Today we listened to The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane, and Tom Sawyer.  Wow am I glad I’m listening to Tom Sawyer and not reading it.  I have a real hard time reading slang and dialect words.
