We spent seven days on this road trip and everything went great.  No one threw up, we only had one stuffy nose, no we pants, no car problems, or speeding tickets, we didn’t lose anything, or spend too much money anywhere.  It was good.

Here are a few travel statistics.  We spent $1263 over 7 days and 2655 miles.  We stayed at six cheap motels for $400.  The most expensive gas was in California and the least in Texas for $3.09 and spent $400 for gas. I tried my best to stay away from chain restaurants but we couldn’t exactly avoid it.  A few evenings we picked up microwave meals or ate left overs, our food bill was only $250.  I figure we could have flown for the same price, but where is the adventure in that!

Our last travel day was uneventful. The area from Mobile, AL up to about Pensacola, FL had interesting causeways and bridges over swamps and water, but after that it was just highway lined with trees.  I did notice that all the way across we only went through 2 toll booths, both in the last 1/2 hour of the trip.  Two years ago we had toll after toll from Denver all the way through New York.  I can also see why there are so many travel/food shows on tv about diners and truck stops.  Thursday morning we left without breakfast and about an hour down the road we stopped at the Derailed Diner.

All the decorations have to do with travel.  The tables were glass covered boxes full of memorabilia, some of the tables looked like a tailgate,  some of the seats were from airplanes, motor cycles and tractors.  I don’t think my breakfast was the best I ever had, but we sure had fun.

Back on the road again.  By the time we arrived at Mom’s apartment we were numb, tired, weak and thankful the trip was over.
