Hooper Hot Springs Pool

[flagallery gid=13 name="Gallery"]

We have a blast every year at this hot springs pool. The pool is about 100 degrees, the water is from a geothermal artesian well.

Hooper is a VERY small town, in the San Juan Valley, south central Colorado.  To the west is the San Juan Mountains, to the east the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and then the plains that extend across the mid west.  Hooper is also home to an Alligator farm. Colorado Gators started out as a Tilapia farm, they brought in the Alligators to clean up after the fish farm.

The swimming pool and alligator farm are supported by a geothermal artesian wells.  The artesian well is really interesting.  Apparently, an underground pocket of water is situated on a slope going up the mountain.  So, if the well is dug in the valley, the pressure from the water at the higher elevation creates the water pressure out of the well.  This water is replenished with snow and rain in the mountains.
Their other services include bio-mechanical & gait analysis, athletic load monitoring, functional buying viagra prescription movement testing, integrative intelligence test, nutritional consultancy, sports massage therapy and injury management. Just to the east of the pool at the base of the mountains is Great Sand Dunes National Park. The Sand Dunes is my favorite National Park, the kids love to roll down the dunes, there are rocks, bugs and plants that can only be found here, and in the early summer there’s a wonderful warm river that flows at the base of the dunes, all sand, no rocks in this river.  Unfortunately, we did not get to play here this year.

The hatchery has an educational room, with pictures of fish, pamphlets about local fishing, license information and the best is a binder with photos and details of how the hatchery is run.  From there the volunteers give everyone a gallon or so of fish pellets to scatter.  The kids love feeding the fish.  This year we also saw a snake and several birds by the raceways.  The kids go back a few times for more pellets, and we always leave with plenty of stories about the fish and critters we saw.

St. Louis

Wow, the Arch in St. Louis was the highlight of the road trip.  The Gateway Arch (630 ft high) is part of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial National Park.  We had a blast there.  First, we had to drop poor Topaz off at a doggie day care.  It was clean, safe, and full of free range dogs, but i don’t think she was happy.  Then, we spent the afternoon touring the museum, Arch, and lunch at a waterfront restaurant.

This afternoon was definitely a two thumbs up, must see stop.

Chicago

[flagallery gid=6 name="Gallery"]

I’ve always felt a small connection to Chicago.  My Grandfather was from a small town in Southern Illinois, not too far from St. Louis, MO. His brother and a handful of friends and relatives lived in the Chicago area and we visited a few times.  Also, the people in Buffalo, where I was raised, always said that whatever weather they have in Chicago will be in Buffalo in 24 hours, but worse.  So, it was nice to stop for a visit. We also have great friends, the Bartel family, that live there.  Heading east arriving at their house was like coming home after a two day trip across the plains.

This was our third year training up the next generation of fishing kids.  We started at Tam Bir Cottages in 2009 and returned to the Willow Bay Cottages Jim and I fished from as kids.  By now we’ve got the routine down, Jim and Ania have a cottage and the kids and I have then next one.  We all share a pontoon boat that’s stored in the boat house out front.  Jim brings all the gear and experience and I bring the chaos.  We’ve made a few friends at the camp and see them from year to year as well as favorite activities and shops in the nearby towns.

Fair Midway Rides

Every year we go to the Erie County Fair and the kids drool at the midway rides, but I avoid them because of the ticket prices.  This year we bought a reasonably priced ‘ride all day’ wrist band and they enjoyed the the flashy colors, bright lights, and noises of the carnival midway rides. They started out with the thrill rides, moved on to the fun houses, did a few kiddie rides, then in the evening when everything was lit up, did it all over again.  Oh and the Games,  they played the water gun games, ball tosses, duckie picking, and bowling ball pushing.  A kids paradise, thanks to the chores they did for Nannie.
