On Monday my grandma, from Buffalo, took me and my sister to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  The park was decorated for Christmas.

Right when we walked in there was this Christmas tree with animals for decorations and the star made of sticks.

We went on a safari and saw alligators.  All the amusement parks in Florida seem to have alligators.

We rode in a big safari jeep and saw African cow with big horns.

We saw lots of animals like lions, cheetah, rhinoceros, hippos, ostriches, and these elephants.

From mom’s apartment we drove about 7 miles down highway 192 toward Disney World.  The closer we got, the more concentrated the restaurants and souvenir shops became. The reason we went to Celebration today was because the Gath family, who is visiting their grandma this weekend,  invited us.  The early years when I first met Beth and her children was a bit of a blurr to me. The kids were young and needy and I was in survival mode, so forgive me if my years are off a little.  I think it was Roy’s kindergarten year, 2006, Genny was in Mrs. Danuta’s toddler music class at the park and I was sitting at the playground with 5 year old Roy and 1 year old Marie and I noticed two moms that appeared to have slightly older children as well. Yes indeed, Beth and Alexis were homeschooling their 1st graders.  At the same time Tara started up the Long Beach Homeschoolers yahoo group, and some months later we encouraged a few coaches from EMH sports to offer their class at the same park and the same time as music class.  That’s where it all began.  Now there are a few hundred families in the group enjoying classes, parties, park days, play dates and field trips together.

A few months ago I was chatting with Beth and told her of our plans for Thanksgiving and since her family would be here visiting for the holiday as well, we set the Florida playdate.  For weeks before we left, my kids and I were really sad about leaving friends, since we left, the kids have been doing facetime and calling friends, but there’s nothing as comforting that a hug from a little friend.

There were soaked and covered with the goop.  I was trying to have fun, but all I could think of was putting those messy sisters in my mom’s car and driving them home.

Roy was proud of his maturity in not getting messy, so he posed for a picture with the Christmas Tree.

That’s when I got the bright idea to put the sisters in the fountain for a shower.  They were freezing cold and the sun was setting, but ‘girls just want to have fun’.

Roy and I saw poor Marie shivering, and were very happy to be warm and dry.  I took off their wet shirts and gave them jackets, in the car they took off the wet pants and wrapped in towels and off we went.  But we had so much fun we’ve decided to go again on Sunday for the farmer’s market and show Nannie the alligators.

Thanksgiving, my favorite Holiday of the whole year.  It’s all about cooking and eating, and has nothing to do with gifts, decorations, or costumes.  As a kid, my mom would have the table set the day before, have several of the dishes started and then buzz around the kitchen on Thursday morning getting everything going. Dad was always there to peel potatoes, take things in and out of the oven, take the trash out, or any other job mom delegated to him. Buffalo, NY is very cold on Thanksgiving Day, sometimes we would need to shovel the driveway so my grandparents could park. Then we would squish on the couches with my grandparents watching Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Thanksgiving in Hawaii was a fun filled weekend with my friends, sometimes family, but mostly friends because we were all out there alone.  Becky would bring a puzzle, the men were in charge of the meat, and the amount of wine we drank determined what time dinner was ready.  The party went on for several days and usually included windsurfing, sailing and scuba diving.

The last few years we’ve had a quiet little dinner at the cabin.  I’m really looking forward to the kids coming to the cabin with their families and friends for a big celebration

This year we’re in Kissimmee, FL with my mom.  She wanted to take us out to a buffet for dinner, but Roy said, “Oh no, we have to cook!”  No problem, we can put together a simple meal.

The day started with Genny’s breakfast.  I sat on the couch watching the giant floats go down the streets of NYC.  We talked about November two years ago when we visited NYC as well as D.C., Philadelphia and Buffalo for turkey dinner.  Genny whipped up the most beautiful spinach cheese omelet I’ve had in a long time.  Marie prepared Florida oranges for a garnish and we sipped sparkling apple cider.

Then to get the preparations started, Marie chopped celery and onions.  Sniff, Sniff, the onions made Marie cry.  Luckily, her fancy hairdo kept her bangs from getting wet with tears.

While the turkey was roasting away we decided to cool off in the pool.  Mom’s door is three away from the pool which is nicely heated.  Even when it’s overcast and cold outside, the kids go in the pool and stay submerged. For some reason, socks we’re the pool toy of the day.
