Over the last 10 years I've decided the best way to know what God expects is to attend Bible Study. I have two favorites: http://www.communitybiblestudy.org/ has great programs especially for women and children together and lately I've been attending http://www.precept.org/ for a very in-depth study of the bible. Try a bible study to learn all about what's in God's book.Check this out

Boat work and paperwork
Yesterday we made more progress on the boat. We swapped out the impellers for the raw water pumps. It’s great have two engines on the boat (one can be a backup), but it’s twice the maintenance.
After that we jammed a hose in the sea water intake for each diesel engine. They started right up!
Today we learned from our customs broker that there is still a lot of paperwork left to do before they can release our crates. We went over to his office and helped with the paper work. For each item in the crate, we have to match it to a customs code, and then enter it in an online form. I’m getting experience as a Jr. customs broker.

Settling In
We’ve been here for three whole days, I managed to clean out the van and sort out the many items we crammed in at the last minute. I read all the cards our pals gave us on our way out.

I sure will miss our friends on all these activities, but I’m very happy to say the kids are getting along quite well.
More progress
This morning we started the day by attempting to put the jib back on the roller furler. We got the jib up to the front trampoline and then realized that one of the shackles we needed was bent and broken. We waited for the Marine store to open to get a new one. They didn’t have the exact size but they had one that was close. We got it, unfortunately it was just a bit too large, and we needed a rat tail file to enlarge the hole. As you might guess, my rat tail file is in the crates, so we rode the bus into town and found a great hardware store. We got a rat tail file and we stocked up on bottom paint supplies (rollers, brushes, trays, etc). We also discovered a Subway sandwich shop. I saw my first tomato on the island.
We got back to the boat, I enlarged the hole, and we were good to go. We go the jib about halfway up, and it hung up on something. It wouldn’t go up, and it wouldn’t go down, bummer. I had Brian hoist me up with the bosun’s chair about 30 feet to figure out what was wrong. It turns out that a couple of set screws that held the roller furling pieces together had worked loose. Brian taped an allen head wrench to a piece of line and I pulled it up to where I was hanging. I tightened the screw, came back down, and hoped for the best. I was really going to be bummed if there were more like that, I didn’t want to go up anymore. I hate heights. Fortunately, the jib made it up the rest of the way without any issues.

Sorry no pictures of me up the forestay, we had our hands full.
We’re here
We spent seven days on this road trip and everything went great. No one threw up, we only had one stuffy nose, no we pants, no car problems, or speeding tickets, we didn’t lose anything, or spend too much money anywhere. It was good.
Here are a few travel statistics. We spent $1263 over 7 days and 2655 miles. We stayed at six cheap motels for $400. The most expensive gas was in California and the least in Texas for $3.09 and spent $400 for gas. I tried my best to stay away from chain restaurants but we couldn’t exactly avoid it. A few evenings we picked up microwave meals or ate left overs, our food bill was only $250. I figure we could have flown for the same price, but where is the adventure in that!
Our last travel day was uneventful. The area from Mobile, AL up to about Pensacola, FL had interesting causeways and bridges over swamps and water, but after that it was just highway lined with trees. I did notice that all the way across we only went through 2 toll booths, both in the last 1/2 hour of the trip. Two years ago we had toll after toll from Denver all the way through New York. I can also see why there are so many travel/food shows on tv about diners and truck stops. Thursday morning we left without breakfast and about an hour down the road we stopped at the Derailed Diner.
All the decorations have to do with travel. The tables were glass covered boxes full of memorabilia, some of the tables looked like a tailgate, some of the seats were from airplanes, motor cycles and tractors. I don’t think my breakfast was the best I ever had, but we sure had fun.
I’ve posted 3 pictures because I couldn’t get 3 kids in one picture. Here are their funny faces in the train wreck picture.

Back on the road again. By the time we arrived at Mom’s apartment we were numb, tired, weak and thankful the trip was over.
2 steps forward 1 step back
We are making great progress on the boat, but we are running out of things to do without the crates. The crates contain lots of parts for projects, and the tools to complete them. The crates have been in Grenada for a week, as long as it took them to get here from Miami via ship, but customs has not released them yet. Hopefully on Monday.
In the meantime, we got the jib back from the sail loft, they sewed a new luff tape. We cleaned out the anchor locker, we evicted about 10 frogs. We wiped down the bilge area in each cabin. We also discovered the slow leak in the dinghy:
Unfortunately we can’t repair it until we get the crates. My hypalon repair kit is in the crates.

Last day On the Road
This is our 7th day on the road and we’re tired of traveling. It’s 8 hours to Kissimmee and the apartment my mom has rented for the winter. I think we’ll “head for the barn” today. No one wants another night in a hotel, and no one is interested in a point of interest or more restaurant food. I would like to travel with ‘No One’ she sounds like fun. The Big Easy
Yahoo, we’re ready to party down in New Orleans. First order of business is the Doggie Daycare. Topaz got dropped off for the day so we could ride the street car and go to restaurants. I researched this place before we left home, but no amount of research can make up for Topaz’s anxiety over being left. When we picked her up she was all droolly, thirsty and had to potty. Not because of neglect but because she gets so anxious she can only worry.
We drove through downtown New Orleans to get to the French Quarter, there was a huge flag on top of one of the tall buildings with this symbol on it. Roy recognized it immediately as the Boy Scout symbol. I was amazed that the Boy Scouts had such a prominent building in this city. We took a good look at the signs but no where did it say Boy Scout. Then as we walked around the city the symbol was everywhere including on the trash cans and police cars. Hmm, I guess you can tell that we don’t even watch football, because it’s there too. It is actually called the fleur de lis, flower of the lily. The symbol was used by French Royalty. Follow the link for more history of the fleur de lis.
Our original idea for the day was to drink heavily, take off our shirts and get beads. But like most things on this trip, we were there at the wrong time. So instead we took the St. Charles street car. This tour was recommended over French Quarter, because it would be more interesting to the kids.
The map took us up this block and over that block and then follow the line until you find the street car. After several blocks I asked someone and they said to take the bus. Ug, The bus went several miles to the cable car which was pretty cool. We got off at Audubon park, the kids ripstiked for about a mile, had fun with the Spanish Moss old man’s beard, then back on a bus to the French Quarter. Along the way we did see beautiful houses, narrow streets lined with houses turned into shops and restaurants. Two girls sat behind Roy talking really fast. I asked if he understood any of their conversation and he said the only word he recognized was ‘she’.
Now everyone is hungry. I was feeling a bit lost, anxious and hungry, but the French Quarter took care of all our problems. I think that might be a problem as well, right?
We were directed to the New Orleans Seafood and Hamburger restaurant. The girls ordered cheeseburgers, Roy and I shared a Shrimpzilla po-boy and a bowl of gumbo. OH yea, good food again! A nice big beer and now I’m ready for whatever comes up next.
From there the rest of the afternoon was easy. I felt a bit rushed because we used up so much of our morning on the streetcar, but entertainment was coming easy now. It was a short walk from the restaurant to the Mississippi River where the Steamboat Natchez was docked. We didn’t go aboard but from the pier listened to a woman playing the Calliope. Wow that was cool! She looked like she was playing a piano keyboard and steam was coming out of a row of whistles to make the tune. It was really loud but nothing like we’ve ever heard.

A little further down was a raised patio the kids wanted to ripstik up and down the ramps, it also gave us a view of the river from one side and …..
Jackson Square on the other side. It was named to honor the Battle of New Orleans hero Andrew Jackson.
How about some desert. When ever I mention New Orleans people tell me not to miss the beignets. This powdered doughnut was brought to New Orleans by the Acadians, which were French Canadians. I have to do some research on all the many people that make up the flavor of New Orleans.
The original Cafe Du Monde was established in 1862 as a coffee shop.
So, now we’ve had seafood, gumbo, alcohol, seen a steamboat and had a beignet, all that’s left is music. We followed the sound of Jazz to the end of the alley and were surprised to find Navy Musicians. The Navy did great things for me in the 1980s, what a great job for a struggling musician, serve our country while enjoying your job.
The last thing on the tour, it the last place on the tour for these people, The Metairie Cemetary. Vaults are used in this area because the water table is so high. These cities of the dead are an attraction I wish I had more time to explore.
Back to the road trip. I would say that this trip to New Orleans just gave me an idea of what I might like to see next time. We had fun and am glad we didn’t miss it.
Another day, more tasks crossed off the list
Today we did more stuff, not very exciting but necessary nonetheless:
- put a fuel filter inline for the dinghy’s fuel tank
- flipped the dinghy over, inflated it, cleaned it
- scrubbed the port trampoline
- filled the water tanks
- scrubbed the deck
- bought spare impellors for the main diesel engines
- ordered new flares
- discovered a broken hoseclamp on the starboard engine, replaced with a new one
- replaced the broken hasp on the main door
- converted a european extension cord to US plugs

Louisiana
I woke up excited this morning, today’s drive was just going to be 4 hours and we would be in the same state for 2 nights. Before heading down the highway, the Natchitoches Federal Fish Hatchery was our first stop. Every year we stop at a fish farm in Colorado and have the best time. We’ve been planning to stop at this fish hatchery for several months now. The website said they raise alligator gar, bass, catfish, and several other interesting fish. When we arrived, the place was deserted. A nice lady in the office said we could look around, but the ponds were all drained for the winter. Oh, well, we’ll have more time in New Orleans this afternoon.
The ride started pretty boring, road, trees, lots of State Troopers with radar guns, and more road kill. There was a noticeable change in the types of animals that end their lives on the highway Louisiana. We saw a big brown turkey, porcupine, goose looking bird, and a handful of armadillos, along with the many indistinguishable piles of fur. It sounds like a pretty gruesome thing to look out for, but roadkill and State Troopers are the most interesting thing on the road.
Just before Baton Rouge we stopped for lunch. Let me see, McDonalds on the left or a small seafood restaurant on the right. Marie voted for the clown selling chicken part nuggets and I voted for seafood restaurant with the pickup trucks in the parking lot. Since I’m doing the driving, we had seafood. The girls had chicken strips and fries, Roy had shrimp and fries and I had the special. This is a seafood stuffed bell pepper, fried catfish with crawfish étouffée and garlic bread. Oh, yea! Lunch made my day.
If there was one useless law on the ballot I would vote for, it would be one mandating that farmers put a big sign along the road describing their crops. When we drive to Colorado, we’re always playing this guessing game. The unique crop there is potatoes. Today we saw a field that had already been harvested and we guessed it was cotton. Then we saw these big trucks going down the road with wire sides and some kind of stalks in it. My memory rewound back to the late 1980s when I lived in Hawaii and I guessed it was sugar cane. Sure enough, a few more miles down the road there was a sign posting a sugar cane loading area. When I got out to take the picture, I could even smell the scent of the cane fields.
As the excitement level of men reaches to a certain level, however not viagra canada cheap entirely. This purchase cialis herb is also originated in China and South-East Asia. There are viagra online stores many factors responsible for this condition. However, there is a major difference between these jelly pills and traditional ED discount viagra india http://www.solboards.com/cialis-3171.html pills is that they are often associated with side effects as they are composed of the same chemical component as the original medication (in this case sildenafil citrate) that too in a negative manner.
Back onto the highway, this time it’s I-10. Wow, 2000 miles to the west is the exit we take to get to our cabin.
I-10 goes right through New Orleans. If you use google maps (satellite) and zoom in to the area on the western edge of the New Orleans airport, right under Lake Pontchartrain, you’ll see that for several miles, I-10 is a causeway through a swamp. It’s crazy, the picture on the GPS showed that the road was over the water, there were houses and docks out there too. They must be completely covered in water when a hurricane comes.
We were very happy to arrive in the daylight so we could see all this cool stuff. Before vegging out in the hotel for the rest of the night, I thought we would check out City Park. It reminded me a lot of El Dorado Park, in Long Beach, combined with just a little bit of Balboa Park, in San Diego, adding the southern touch of Spanish Moss hanging off the trees. The kids got their Ripstiks out and zipped all over the place, Topaz was very happy to be out of the car. It was miserable on the other end of her leash, she was yanking me everywhere as she chased squirrels, geese and leaves blowing in the wind. Finally, Genny started the Topaz train and all the kids held her leash while she pulled them around on their Ripstiks. We saw a dog park on the map, but it was for members only, bummer. Topaz was happy to dig a hole in the dirt at the playground while a little boy laughed like crazy. The boy’s name is John and his baby sister is Mary, that’s what my grandparent’s names were.
Genny’s gift to the trip is being observant and remembering details. If I can’t find something or remember something, she’s got the answer. The other day I got in the car to drive off in the morning and couldn’t find my sunglasses. She said she remembered them in our traveling trash can. Oops, I emptied that into a bag and left it in front of our room door. Sure enough my glasses were in there, smelling a little of Subway sandwiches, but they didn’t get left.
Today we finished Tom Sawyer and The Miraculous Journey of Edward Toulane on audio books and started The Cricket in Times Square. This evening I downloaded Huckleberry Finn. I’m sure glad to have someone else read those books to me, I can’t handle the lingo and slang.
Trip into town
Today we took a bus into St. George. A bus in Grenada is a mini-van. The trip in cost $3.50 EC (Eastern Caribbean dollars, 2.70 EC = 1$US). We wandered around town and found an Ace hardware that had some stuff we needed. We also did some food shopping. At both the grocery store and the bus ride home they have already started playing christmas music! We also talked to the stainless guy. He has a good design, so we are in the queue to get it built, unfortunately they can’t start until December. Pictures from our outing:
