Over the last 10 years I've decided the best way to know what God expects is to attend Bible Study. I have two favorites: http://www.communitybiblestudy.org/ has great programs especially for women and children together and lately I've been attending http://www.precept.org/ for a very in-depth study of the bible. Try a bible study to learn all about what's in God's book.Check this out

Un-birthday Party
For a year now, the kids have all been commenting on how we will be missing birthday parties. They point out when their having the last party we will be able to attend, they’ve been counting how many birthdays we’ll miss, and how old everyone will be when we return. It’s hard to compensate for missing so many milestones in a child’s life, but we thought an Un-birthday party would at least be a good shot. The kids passed our flyers to all their friends. Meet at the park, bring your own cup cake and a birthday gift to trade and we’ll sing Happy Birthday to all of us.
We had special friends from all our many activities. Marie had her special girl friends from CBS Bible Study.
Roy had lots of guy pals including Eli, Tyler and PJ.
Genny also has her pals, some from bible study and some from music class.

Mrs. Danuta loves music, loves to teach, and loves her students. Our homeschool group was formed about six years ago when a few moms with toddlers in Mrs. Danuta’s class noticed each other’s older kids. That’s when we started our weekly park day. Shortly afterwards EMHSports started holding sports classes at the same time and our group grew. Many of our friends attend Mrs. Danuta’s afternoon/evening recorder classes, here’s a short video of one of their songs.

Life continues
Sometimes it feels like boat preparations have been all consuming. This week we also took a break to make Halloween costumes. Minecraft has been on everyone’s mind this year, so that’s what their theme is. The girls chose fabric, frills, ruffles and sequins, Roy chose cardboard boxes. Sorry I don’t have a picture for him, I’ll try to get one one soon.

I painted Roy’s bedroom and bathroom, about 15 interior doors in the condo, more trim still to be done. I moved almost all of our possessions into storage tubs stacked in the girls’ closet or on their bunk beds, and into the downstairs guest room to be packed in a suitcase. We also have a stack of stuff in the garage to go in the van.
Eric is flying to the boat, but we’re driving to Florida and storing our van at a friend’s house in NJ. Next summer we’ll be up there avoiding hurricanes and use the van to visit East Coast family, friends, and have adventures at some of the historical sites that formed the country we live in with all the freedoms we currently have. The van will be loaded with cold weather clothes for next fall, more books and school books that I’ve collected for future grades. We also have kites and camping gear, and anything else we couldn’t live without but couldn’t justify shipping.
Neighbors
There are all kinds of people we’re going to miss. Closest to home are our neighbors. They put together a beautiful BBQ right there in front of our garages. These are the people we see every day while walking Topaz, we remind each other to move our cars because of the street sweeper, we discuss vermin problems like the vole that invaded our lawns last winter, the kids run through the alleys visiting each other, we share extra cookies with them, and get to wave at each other in the morning when we’re putting out trash in our pajamas.

Shipment
Over the past 10 months Eric has been ordering and collecting parts and tools, we’ve been digging out all our boating and diving gear, servicing and replacing parts, and cleaning out the house separating the items to be shipped from the items to be transported and stored in the van, items to be stored and left behind, and items to be trashed or passed on. Finally, we shipped all the gear, replacement parts, tools, solar panels, dive gear, dog food, books, first aid supplies and other necessary items. It weighed over 2000 lbs and fit into 4 crates. Our pal Patrick was a key player in this operation. He provided the pallets and boxes, the warehouse for staging and packing, and finally arranged for transportation to the shipping company in Los Angeles.
When Eric and Rodney arrived in Grenada in December, they arranged for Rodney’s stuff to be shipped back to Alameda with Tropical Shipping, so that’s the first and only place we looked at for our shipment. They have boats that leave on a weekly schedule from Miami with stops at most of the Caribbean Islands. Tropical also affiliates with trucking companies around the country to bring pallets from places like here in Los Angeles. So, how much does a shipment like this cost? I know everyone is wondering Well, that’s were it gets complicated. Olarte’s land rates are based on weight and Tropical’s rates are based on cubic feet. Mixing the apples and oranges into the optimum fruit salad meant that each box should be no more than 39 cubic feet ($195 flat rate) and at least 400 lbs (30 cents/lb). Amazingly, we made it work. I still don’t know the exact cost of the shipment, but our weights were 1. 400lbs, 2. 800lbs, 3. 550lbs, 4. 550lbs. You can do the math, I don’t have my calculator out right now.
The first order of business was to rent a u-haul and take the stuff to Patrick’s warehouse, assemble and cut the boxes to 28 inches. That was the height we determined would equal just less than 39 cubic feet, the volume of the pallet also has to be taken into consideration.
The solar panels were easy to pack, Eric sent them off to a crate guy and had a custom crate made for maximum protection for those fragile panels. Next we started 39 cubic foot piles in the garage, before moving them to Patrick’s warehouse Eric took a picture. Those piles were in the garage so long, it was mostly committed to memory, but the pictures helped when our memory failed. Eric’s original plan was to bolt the compressors to the pallet, but those boxes were packed so tight it was obvious that nothing was going to shift.

Eric brought labels and packing lists for the boxes, we taped and wrapped the cardboard, and that was the end of the packing. Our great friends came to the rescue with child care. The AAnonson’s took the kids to church, then just as we were ready pull out with the full u-haul, the kids came in the back door and went out the front with Julia and PJ, after packing I pulled up to their back door and whisked everyone off to the Sexton family for dinner.
Tuesday the packed boxes were moved to the shipping company and weighed. Patrick arranged for the truck and had it loaded, then Eric met them in Los Angeles to have the boxes measured and weighed, logged in and sent off. Thursday the truck was supposed to leave LA and arrive in Miami this coming Tuesday, loaded on the boat and sent to the island on Thursday arriving in Grenada on November 2nd the same day Eric arrives. Whew, I hope it all works out. The shipyard is helping with clearing customs and I talked to a guy with a truck who said he can deliver the crates to the boat. Stay tuned for posts from Eric around November 5th or so to see how that works out.
First Aid Kit — Back to Boat Work
Back to boat work. We’re shipping in about a week and we have to get everything in! Last week I loaded up on first aid supplies. We have stuff for digestive problems, skin irritations, colds, pain, and wound care. This morning we took everything out of the packages, taped the directions to the back of the packet and circled the exp. date. It all fit very nice in this box that came to us with Legos in it and most recently housed Littlest Petshop characters. The wound care items and first aid books had to go in the back pack.

Los Angeles County Fair
We already went to one county fair this summer, but the AAnonson’s talked about all the fun things at the LA County fair, so we had to go. Since it was only a month ago that we had been to the Erie County fair in New York, I noticed the similarities and differences. The most glaring difference had to do with the animal barns. In NY, the animal barns were geared toward families showing their animals. They would set up camp chairs and cots, I remember crock pots simmering dinner and young people in the rings hoping for a blue ribbon. The EC fair took place in August when the kids were out of school and they could participate. LA fair is in September, there was one big animal barn geared toward education, more of a petting zoo atmosphere. Local schools attend, there are groups of kids with their school t-shirts and chaperons and many of the exhibits had educational presentations.
The kids enjoyed seeing the goats, sheep, pigs, chicks, and cows, but the real excitement came when we found a preying mantis.
At one point someone put it on a school girl and she totally FREAKED out. The man from the bee exhibit ran over and save the poor insect’s life by tossing it back into the bushes before she stomped on it.
The bee exhibit was interesting too. They had a pipe leading into this hive display. Notice the bee with the yellow dot that the finger is pointing to. That is the queen, her ladies in waiting surround her like a flower, tending to all her needs. Her only job is to lay eggs, if she dies, the hive prepares new pupae to hatch as queens. The first one to hatch, kills the rest and becomes the new queen.
There was another exhibit for inventions. It was one of the best museums I’ve been to in a long time. First of all, it was air conditioned, a pleasant relief from the heat. The kids had a great time with the Benjamin Franklin electricity exhibit and I was impressed by Steve Jobs’ patents.

There were also Wright Bros. and Ford exhibits, and plaques all over the walls describing other inventions.
The last highlight for the day was the rides. First of all each ride cost’s between $5 and $10 and there was no way we were going to pay those prices. So, Krista clued us into a library offer where the kids can do book reports for rides. The each did 6 book reports and received 6 free rides.
When they decided to do a ride the conversation always had to do with whether or not it was worth a book report.
In the end, everyone was happy with their choices.
Boat Dive
Yahoo! After two weeks of answering questions, a strenuous beach dive, and three boat dives, Roy is now a certified diver. He did great, completed all the water skills and book knowledge with flying colors. Roy can be identified by his wet suit with BLUE accents, orange on his snorkel and orange fins,
Sunday morning we met the boat at 6:15am and headed to Catalina. There were about 15 divers on board as well at the dive master and captain. The ride was about an hour and a half long, smooth, a little foggy, warm enough and left me a bit sleepy.
We dove in 3 locations: Starlight, Eel, and Lion’s Head. While the captain was setting the anchor, the dive master told us about the location. She pointed out landmarks, told us what depths to expect, what the current and bottom are like and any other information she had about the site. As each diver suited up and made their way to the back of the boat, she also checked us off and did a roll call when we returned. It’s best not to leave without all your divers.
This is Roy doing a giant stride off the back of Sundiver to his instructor Lindsay. From there Lindsay had the students do a few skills on the surface and then after they signaled to go down, looked around, put the regulator in, checked the time, they all went down along the anchor or buoy line.
On the bottom Lindsay had a few more skills before taking everyone for a spin around the cove. On this day Lindsay had two adult students and two 11-yr old boys. I noticed that when the students settled to the bottom, the men focused their attention on the instructor but the boys played. It was fun to watch them digging in the sand, poking at shells and kelp.
Roy was a buddy with Matthew, the boy in the wet suit with yellow accents. They decided on the second dive to go down without a hood. This decision was reversed on the last dive because they found out how much heat is lost through their head.

The sky was clear and the sun shown all the way down to where we were at 30ft. Until Roy is 15, his Junior certification will only allow him to dive to 40 ft. This depth will be fine to hunt for lobster, watch eels slither out of their holes, enjoy the brilliant colors of fish that live in the shallower depths, and here in California follow the kelp as it reaches to the surface.
While we were at the Aquarium a few days ago, Roy expressed an interest in diving in the kelp beds. Today his wish came true.
The kelp is an algae that fastens itself to a rock and grows at a rate of more than a foot a day. These forests wave in the surging water and have urchins, fish, and little horn sharks living in and around the edges.
At the end of the dive, the goPro battery was finished for the day. I managed to get a picture of the Garibaldi fish, California’s state fish, but missed the schools of tiny fish, little sharks and other fish I need to learn to identify when spend more time diving in California.
Next, the dive gear gets packed up and shipped off to Makai where we’ll be learning about Caribbean Tropical fish.
Beach Dive
Today was Roy’s first open water dive. We met in Laguna at 7am and were excited for this new experience. After a quick brief from Lindsay, the instructor, we went back to the car to get dressed. Wet suit, booties, hood, bcd, tank, regulator, weights, gloves, mask around the neck and fins in hand. At this point any movement was exhausting. From the car we walked two blocks to the stairs at the top of the beach access. Roy and I quickly wilted under the weight and neoprene so we got permission to go to the beach and take our heavy gear off. With all that constricting hot gear, we could easily get sick. Finally our group was ready to crash into the waves and head out to the buoy. Once at the bottom movement was effortless, we were much cooler and now we could enjoy the sites. Big orange Garibaldi everywhere, kelp columns rising up to the surface, fish cleverly camouflaged in the sand and the bottom was thick with shells. The dive felt way to short and then it was time to do the exit and return to the car. This time we had to walk up all those stairs with all the gear. By the time we got to the car the relief of taking everything off was almost more exciting than the dive.
Tomorrow is boat diving in Catalina. This is going to WAY better, and then after that we’ll be diving off of Makai in tropical waters. No more neoprene, half the weight, jump off the boat, no hiking, warm water, more cool fish. Yes, that’s what it’s all about.
