Homeschool Boondoggles

There’s education in all adventures.  Today, after a light night with SCUBA class, Krista calls to tell me they are heading out ‘right now’ for the beach to see Endeavour arrive in Los Angeles.  Yikes! throw everyone in the car, and head to the beach.  Eric texted us it’s current location as people spotted it along the CA coast.  Monterrey Bay, Santa Barbara, Santa Monica, Griffith Park, Disneyland, and then it shot right out to the coast just below Long Beach and just above us in Huntington Beach to make it’s final run up to LAX.  We all saw it off in the distance.  There was a lady dipping her baby’s toes in the water so peacefully, but if I didn’t bother her, she would have missed it.  I guess I’ll go to the CA Science Center at the end of October for a better look.

The space shuttle was nice, but sand all over is even better.

SCUBA lessons

After two grueling weeks of online SCUBA classes, Roy finally got some bottom time.  Deep Blue Scuba in Long Beach set us up with gear, an instructor, and a boat dive.  So far, Roy has only had two pool dives, the new experience has him really excited and anxious to get out to the ocean.  The rental gear from this shop is outstanding.  Light years better than the gear we own.  Our gear is vintage, circa 1988 – 1990 something.  But it will be fine for diving around in our tropical anchorages.

What has been done for the boat lately?

Everyday we prepare for our move.

In the past month:
We’ve made airline reservations for all of us
A reservation on the car train from Orlando to Virginia for when I move the van to New Jersey
Contacted several of the island nations to submit Topaz’s import paperwork
Started crate training Topaz (she hates the crate)
Bought an 8 month supply of kibble
Started Roy on his SCUBA certification
Did massive amounts of sorting, cleaning, clearing and packing our belongings
Straightened out the details for shipping gear to the boat
Applied for health insurance
Requested absentee ballot voting for November
Opened a checking account with Schwab that has no international transaction fees
Converted the SCUBA air compressor  from gas to electric
Completed the drogue and chain plates
Bought an EPIRB
Set up a WIFI antenna
Designed the solar panel array and stainless mount
Collected more supplies and tools including zincs, chargers for the starter battery, and a clamp on amp meter
New laptop for some remote work and navigation

Eric and our pal Patrick had a shipping crate built for Makai’s four 230w solar panels.  After discussions with Tropical Shipping we found that the optimum box to ship is a series of 39 cu ft boxes weighing 400lbs.  From LA to Miami they ship by weight with a 400lb minimum, and from Miami to Grenada they ship by volume with a flat rate box of 39 cu ft being the least expensive price per cu ft.

I’ve been spending countless hours sifting through all of our stuff both at the Cypress condo and our cabin in Angelus Oaks.  In both places I’ve sorted ‘stuff’ into piles to donate, box up and save, or take to the boat.  I’m trying to  box up our belongings that the people using our houses won’t use to prevent it from collecting dust and getting in their way.

Topaz is a big project.  There is not even a question about whether she should go with us, so we had to get to work.  To bring a pet into these rabies free island countries we’re required to vaccinate her for everything under the sun, have her blood tested for rabies antibodies, and then apply for permits for each country we’re visiting. Topaz has always had nervous panting and drooling anxiety in the crate.  To get her used to the crate she’ll be in when she flies to Grenada, I’ve been giving her daily crate time. While we’re doing school work in the kitchen and during dinner time, she has to hang out in the big evil box.

The pup also likes to eat.  Since I’m not sure where I will be able to get this fancy pampered pup chow, we have to take it with us.  She gobbles up half a bag a month.

Roy is working hard on making 1st class Boy Scout before we leave.  He has a lot of requirements to complete, but we have a list and a plan.  He’s also working super hard on getting SCUBA certified.  In lieu of classroom time, the dive shop has the students use PADIs elearning website.  There are 6 sections, each with many lessons.  The lessons are taught with slides, videos and quizzes.  He’s been spending long days on this site.  I’m very impressed at how well he’s retaining the information and excited he is to know it.  Most of what he’s learning I forgot long ago.

While it feels like we’ve done a whole lot of work in the past year, there is still so much to do. There is still a pallet in the garage that will hold a cardboard box full of heavy equipment, compressors, tools and dive gear.

Then we’ll have to come up with something for surfboards, books and other little things we can’t live without.

Now we’re back to school

Ok, ok, now we’re back to school.  In previous years we were enrolled in Sky Mountain Charter School which served homeschool families from five Southern California counties.  They provided state funding for classes and curriculum as long as we took the state test and met monthly with a teacher who collected our attendance and a sample from each subject tackled.  All the funding allowed us to take some wonderful classes.  This year, because we’ll be leaving the state shortly, we decided to file independent.  That means we submit a form to the state that sets us up as a private school. It’s still hot, so we wrap up our day at the pool.

Not Back to School

Oh, no, it’s that time of year again.  Around here the schools start anywhere from the middle of August to a few days after Labor Day.  Since we’re setting up our own private independent school this year, Makai’s Education Station, we didn’t know what day school starts.  So, we started out by going to the pool.  September in Southern California can be the hottest month of the year, so we better cool off a bit.

Then Roy got an invitation to go to Disney’s California Adventure with his pal P.J.

Labor Day Festivities

Labor Day weekend is filled with festivities for our community in Angelus Oaks.  There is a burger and hot dog lunch to benefit Greyback Disaster Preparedness on Saturday, then Sunday morning is a pancake breakfast to benefit the fire station.  The big draw for my kids, besides the pancakes, it the rummage sale.  Then our cabin association has meetings, a potluck and cocktails.  Monday is usually some work project and rest from all the excitement.  The weekend is a treat because most of our neighbors are at their cabins this weekend.

One of this years hot purchases was this beautiful princess throne that Marie snagged.

This has been a great year for the kids.  Two new families with kids moved in.  Kristin and Jacob are at the end of the road and Tyler and Cody are right across the road from us.  The kids spend the weekend on the swing, shooting BB guns, playing video games and eating lots of watermelon.

We’re home

In our usual style, we returned home Tuesday night.

First of all, United Airline’s computers were down so flights were delayed all day.  After a day of packing and schlepping we finally boarded our last flight at around 6pm.  The four of us headed down the isle to the back of the plane, pulling our luggage, ready to relax.  But, the lady assigned to the window seat was fiddling around with her stuff, which was spread out on our seats.  After about 2 minutes of us blocking several rows while we were waiting, I put our luggage in the overhead several isles away, got the kids seated then went to the back of the plane to wait for her to finish.  Next, Genny pulled her loose tooth out just before we took off, I stored it safely in her wallet.  Half way through the flight Marie got bored and crabby, she spilled her drink and cried for me to buy a $5 can of Pringles, just before we landed she fell asleep, whew.

That’s about when things really started to get crazy.  We were coming in for the landing and despite my warnings, Genny insisted on me giving her the tooth.  Within 30 seconds she dropped it between the seats.  When we landed she crawled around on the floor looking for it.  Meanwhile, the plane emptied and all that was left was that crazy woman messing with her stuff blocking the isle again, and the 4 of us piled into 3 seats waiting for her to move so we could get our stuff and exit, without the tooth.  I think I did a good job of being calm, but I took her stuff out of the overhead and set it in the seats about 5 rows up, got our stuff and headed for the street.  We always have discussion on the best and safest way to take the luggage down the escalator.  Marie decided to do it her own way and was very wobbly.  About 5 steps later there was a second escalator where Marie and Genny got tangled up.  There were 2 suitcases and 1 little girl spread on the floor at the top of the escalator, people coming down the one behind us and Roy at the bottom of the escalator with his shoes untied, ( he likes it that way ), when the lace got stuck in the escalator.  So, I pushed the RED button to stop it, some man yanked his lace out, I carried  the rest of the luggage down the stairs and we made our way to the curb.  Whew, almost finished.  But Wait!  Eric was waiting in a Cell Phone Call parking lot and my phone was dead.  Ahhhh!  I asked the guy next to me, but he said no because his battery was red.  Luckily, after a minute or two, he took pity on me and let me use it.

How was that for Chaos!
